In-Sync Wins Astrolabium Award for Commercial Advertisements at the International Electronic Cinema Festival in Chiba, Japan Vision Engineer John Johns Gives Corpus Christi Medical Center Spots Film Edge Dallas, June 2, 2001: This is the 13th year for the I.E.C.F. (http://www.iecf.org) which grows inimportance every year, as does the field of electronic cinema. The spots that won the international competition were image pieces for Corpus Christie Medical Center. Agency producer Carlos Haney brought in Scott Hello, who shoots national spots out of New York and Dallas, to film the package in 35mm. Without warning, the budget was slashed, and the agency, ¡Idea! Worldwide, almost canceled the shoot rather than compromise quality. There was even talk of shooting only one spot, and doing it in 16mm or digi-beta. Haney and Hello decided to keep the spots simple, and to "gamble" on shooting HDCam. Production costs would be much lower than film (especially shooting young children), and they know the picture resolution would be unquestionable. Mr. Hello convinced Haney and Creative Director Michael Reyes that although the lighting package was limited, he could give a national commercial look to the project by means of composition, and lens choice. Having shot a dramatic piece for Raytheon/Cadillac "Night Vision", Scott knew the versatility of HD in low-light situations, and he and John Johns conducted at HD VISION in Dallas convinced them that HDCam could do much more. Using a non-traditional camera set-up Johns and Hello were able to give the camera/tape a realistic speed of 800-1,000 ASA and have the tape react to whites and highlights as if it were film. Steve Franko of Video Post and Transfer added his commercial expertise in the tape to tape transfer on the Spirit. Tim Werner of HD VISION edited the HD master and handled final color correction.
